The anime adaptation of "Ground.-On the Movement of the Earth-" has recently been released on Netflix. Prior to this, you might never have heard of this manga, which can be considered a relatively obscure work, but its origins are anything but simple. "Ground.-On the Movement of the Earth-" is a Japanese manga created by Uo Toyoda, which began serialization in September 2020. It has since won the second place in the Manga Taisho 2021, ranked second in the male category of "This Manga is Amazing! 2022", and received the Manga Grand Prize at the 26th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize. By December 2021, the cumulative circulation of its tankobon volumes exceeded 1.6 million copies. What is the magic that made this manga a bestseller and now adapted into an anime? Perhaps it's the work's coverage of multiple fields, including science, philosophy, and historical elements, with a particular emphasis on human choices regarding the movement of the earth, the pursuit of knowledge, and the inheritance of blood. Using the "heliocentric theory" as a vehicle, it tells a flesh-and-blood history unfolding in these three aspects.
The story of "Ground.-On the Movement of the Earth-" is set in the 15th century in European country P, where Christianity was prevalent, and the geocentric theory (i.e., the Ptolemaic system) was the only theory explaining the operation of the universe and the movement of celestial bodies, also regarded by the Church as the truth of the world. When other viewpoints emerged, they naturally became heresies in the eyes of the Church, and the method of dealing with heresies was to administer cruel punishments. Under the Church's regulation, the initially introduced Raphael is gradually inspired by a mysterious predecessor about the blueprint of the universe, beginning to question whether the universe truly operates with the Earth at its center? He embarks on research on this, but unfortunately, all actions are suppressed, and in the end, Raphael sacrifices his life, passing on the heliocentric theory in secret.
