For over 150 years, Hong Kong was ruled by Britain, following the invasion of China to protect British interests in opium smuggling. In old Hong Kong, the British-appointed governors, who acted as the imperial representatives, held the highest authority within the executive body and territorial police force, exerting control over the lives of Hong Kong's Chinese natives.

But what did it take to become a Hong Kong governor? While the selection process remains veiled in mystery, examining the backgrounds and attributes of past incumbents may offer some insights.
