The Box Office Disaster of "Snow White"

Every time Disney adapts a classic fairy tale into a live-action version for the big screen, it is bound to be a box office hit, as seen with "The Lion King" and "Beauty and the Beast," which are guaranteed ratings, grossing $1.6 billion and $1.2 billion worldwide respectively. Even "The Little Mermaid," which received negative reviews before its release (due to the African-American lead actress's appearance not matching the original), eventually grossed $570 million at the box office, deducting the $240 million cost, it still made a profit, not too bad. However, "Snow White," which was released worldwide on March 21, "broke the fate," with only $43 million at the US box office in its first week and $87.3 million worldwide. Compared to Disney's history of first-week box office earnings for similar films always exceeding $100 million (even the poorly opened "The Little Mermaid" had a first-week box office of $95 million), this can be said to be a bad start. Even more painful is that the production cost of "Snow White" was as high as $270 million, "securing" the 20th position among the most expensive films globally. If the box office does not rebound later, Disney is highly likely to lose money.

Frankly speaking, as the first full-length animated film shown in theaters, the 1937 "Snow White" is of great significance to Disney. It can almost be said that without "Snow White," there would be no Disney afterwards. Therefore, it is completely understandable that Disney spent a lot of money to make it into a live-action version... However, like "The Little Mermaid," casting is once again the crux of the problem, and this time, not just one lead role was miscast, but both the princess and the queen! Initially, criticism fell on the new Snow White, Rachel Zegler, whose appearance was already problematic: Snow White was not white enough, not at all like a princess, and even shorter than the dwarfs! Regardless of acting skills, just the appearance was problematic, not to mention the queen is Gal Gadot, universally recognized as sexy and charming. The setting of the queen being more beautiful than the princess, one wonders which genius came up with that!

If the appearance is problematic, at least a likable personality could salvage some points, but unfortunately, the opposite is true! Since last year, Rachel Zegler has been creating PR disasters for Disney, first publicly criticizing the 1937 original as outdated, constantly emphasizing that the new version no longer has a prince nor celebrates love, which has already angered traditional Snow White fans; then she said online "Don't forget, Free Palestine," and before the US presidential election, she posted "Fxxk Donald Trump" remarks online. Basically, she has offended almost all the American audience she could, prompting Disney to urgently hire someone to monitor her online comments. Before the movie's release, all her posts had to be reviewed by PR before they could go public, but unfortunately, it was too late, and the damage done was irreparable.

The sweet-looking Gal Gadot seemed fine, but as the Miss Israel winner and a former Israeli Defense Forces soldier, she has repeatedly and highly publicly supported her homeland Israel in recent years. However, the war in the Gaza region has continued to this day, causing the deaths of a large number of women and children. Having her, who supports Israel's aggressive actions, star in a family-friendly movie is bound to provoke a lot of political discussion. Therefore, before the release of "Snow White," anti-Israel organizations in several Arab countries issued statements calling for a worldwide boycott of the film, and Gal Gadot also received death threats after the film's release, forcing Disney to hire additional security to protect her and her family's safety. The two leads supporting Palestine and Israel respectively is quite a dilemma, and rumors of discord have spread, making it rare for the two to appear together to promote the film, indeed adding insult to injury to the already unpromising box office; although they were arranged to present the "Best Visual Effects" at the Oscars (it was rumored that they were originally scheduled to present "Best Documentary Feature," but it was canceled because "Home Is Somewhere Else," co-directed by four Palestinian directors, had a chance to win), their apparent harmony on stage only confirmed the rumors once again.

IMDB unprecedentedly hid the rating of "Snow White" for several days, but "the truth will out." Before the deadline, the score was as low as 1.6. In addition to the various negative factors mentioned above, using CG to create the seven dwarfs in a live-action movie was also widely criticized by fans as disrespectful to the classic. It seems that the movie's bad luck continues, and Disney can only hope for the best!
