In mid-2019, I came alone from Shenzhen to Hong Kong to work as a marketing manager for a startup. To be honest, marketing is not a specialized skill. Every year, hundreds of millions of people graduate with a BBA in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand. The competition is, of course, very fierce. Without luck or connections, the best one can do is to hold a mediocre position, and a monthly salary of 40,000 is even more of a fantasy. It was only because of Rui Yue that I had such an opportunity to bounce back from the bottom (the job at CCB only paid $9,500 a month). For us Shenzhen people, Hong Kong is actually just a high-end version of Shenzhen. Things are prettier, more expensive, cleaner, more systematic, and most people speak Cantonese (40% of Shenzhen's population speaks Mandarin). Since I was born in Guangzhou and my mother tongue is Cantonese, coming to Hong Kong felt particularly familiar and easy to adapt to. Of course, Hong Kong people are a bit xenophobic and would say that we mainlanders are here to compete with them for resources. But when they found out I was from Guangzhou, they seemed to be a bit better, probably because everyone thinks Guangzhou people are more cultured. Also, because our Cantonese accents are similar, communication is more natural. Places like Zhongshan, Guangxi, and Chaoshan, which have heavier local accents, would definitely be discriminated against by Hong Kong people to the point of jumping into the sea.
