Sikh Temple in Hong Kong - Food

Before we experience Guru Ka Langar at the Sikh temple, let’s review the core principle of Guru Ka Langar: equality for all. In the past, everyone was required to set aside their distinctions, not questioning which caste provided the food or disdaining the handling of the food by people of any caste. Everyone sat together and shared meals without regard for status. Today, the practice remains the same, with everyone sitting together on the ground to eat, without any sense of hierarchy.

Although Sikhism originates from Hinduism, it differs in that it does not restrict followers from eating meat. Instead, it embodies the principle of equality and does not impose dietary restrictions. Therefore, there are both vegetarians and meat-eaters among Sikhs. However, since the Sikh temple serves everyone, their community kitchen provides only vegetarian food.

Upon entering the dining area, you should take a plate and sit on the floor, then place the plate on the ground and wait for volunteers to serve food, just as Guru Nanak did in his time.
